It Was Never About The Cookie

When I was 8 years old, I was playing hide ‘n’ seek in the backyard.  I was watching “Little House on the Prairie”.  I was trying to perfect my back handspring. What I was NOT doing (yet) was being a bad-ass feminist. And that is why I was so happy when I saw this post last month:  “Don’t forget to stop by and support this bake sale fundraiser held by two sweet and amazingly bad-ass 8-year old besties right here in Fairlington! Don’t live nearby, but still want to contribute? Feel free to Venmo some funds to @Shineca-Solomon for the cause! All proceeds will go to women's rights/protection groups in honor of the late and great RBG ( futureswithoutviolence.org and nwlc.org ). Both organizations have incredible track records and are rated 4 stars on charity navigator. There will be lots of fall flavors (pumpkin, pecan, apple, and real masala chai to drink!) and DOG TREATS!! They are a little over halfway to their goal of giving each organization $1,000! Please support...

Spreading The Stimulus

I have work I should be doing this evening to catch up.   And I am taking an online class where I am behind in the reading.   And the house is still a mess, even though we have barely been outside it the last 5 ½ weeks. But instead of focusing on any of those “should do”s tonight, I am focusing on a “want to do”.   Or perhaps, in this case, it is a “must do”. I am spreading out my blood money.   Or, as the trump administration likes to call it, my stimulus check. Our government check got deposited this week, all $2400 of it.   But instead of making me feel happy or hopeful, it sort of made me feel dirty.   It feels like an attempt to placate the masses and to buy votes. So, I sat down tonight and I wrote this letter: “Our blood money got deposited this week.   Errr, I mean, our “stimulus check”.    I for one feel like it is too little too late, and had this pandemic hit at any other point beside NOW (i.e., a few months...

The Big Yellow Chapel Is Open For The Season

We all have our take on organized religion.  Much of our perspective is probably shaped by our religious experiences growing up.  I don’t normally talk about religion because it is such a hot button issue.   And, in my experience, if you tell someone you are not religious, a cloud falls over the conversation.   It is as if suddenly their view of you changes, you are judged not for what you are, but for what you are NOT. But in doing some spring cleaning recently I got to thinking about it all.   You see, we have a PEW on our porch.   A real, live, honest to goodness CHURCH PEW.   We got it for free when a neighborhood church decided to close and let itself be replaced by affordable housing (which is something in short supply around us).   I saw a posting saying that they had pews to give away, and for some reason I felt like I really needed one… Our pew It was an odd addition to our house, really.  I don’t “do” Pinteres...

Hold the Champagne

I guess I have always been a feminist.  A feminist in the sense that I believe that all genders are equal. The older I get, the more deeply I believe that, and the less I care about people who judge me for it. Apparently this is what a feminist looks like while watering the garden I am also a democrat, and a believer of many of the ideals the democratic party supports: women’s right to choose, gun control, health care as a human right, equal rights for all, etc. The night before the election at a big rally in Virginia In the 2016 presidential election I was unabashedly on TEAM HILLARY.  I had a big yard sign.  I sported t-shirts. I watched the debates (and played debate BINGO).  I was all in.  Ready for GOP Bingo - early on in the campaigning season Peace, Love, Hillary (canvasing with my partner 2 days before the election - we knocked on 49 doors and talked to 59 people) I live in Arlington, VA, very near DC, and on electio...
